Ekurhuleni runner takes on marathon to fight hunger
Ekurhuleni Athletic Club member Noko Matlou is using his passion for marathon running to raise funds and awareness for Operation Hunger, inspired by his own experience of growing up with hunger.
Ekurhuleni Athletic Club member Noko Matlou is embarking on a run for purpose.
As a seasoned soccer player and accomplished marathon runner, he is using his journey to raise funds and awareness to support Operation Hunger.
In a country where many families continue to face the harsh reality of hunger and malnutrition, he is lacing up his running shoes to raise funds.
Noko will be competing in the 50+ category in the upcoming run in September.

He said running is a lifestyle rooted in discipline and wellness, and believes fitness is more than physical activity; it is a purpose-driven way of life.
Over the years, Matlou has built an impressive record, completing four Comrades Marathons, along with several Two Oceans and Sanlam Cape Town Marathons. Each race, he says, has shaped his character and strengthened his belief in perseverance.
“This year, I want my journey to mean even more,” he explains.
His motivation runs deeper than medals and finish lines. Growing up in a disadvantaged household, Matlou experienced hunger first-hand, a reality that continues to fuel his passion for change.
“Charity begins at home. I grew up walking about 3km back home during school lunch breaks, knowing there would be nothing to eat. I didn’t want to stay at school and show other learners that I had nothing. I know that pain, and I don’t want anyone else to go through it,” he shares.

Determined to make a difference, Matlou joined forces with organisations committed to fighting hunger.
Through his partnership with Operation Hunger, he is now raising funds to support nutrition programmes and sustainable food security initiatives aimed at vulnerable communities across South Africa.
His journey has already inspired many. In a recent radio interview, he inspired listeners; they were so moved by his story and dedication that they reached out to offer financial support for his marathon journey.
“The way the importance of the sacrifices was communicated really touched people. It showed me that when people understand the purpose, they are willing to support,” he said.

Together with Operation Hunger CEO Sandy Bukula and the broader team, Matlou has launched a campaign platform where the public can learn more about the initiative and contribute towards the cause.
For Matlou, this campaign is not just about raising funds; it is about building a culture of giving.
“A well-oiled machine only works when every part plays its role. As athletes and public figures, we often receive support from sponsors and communities. This is our opportunity to give back. I humbly ask everyone to donate what they can. Being part of this campaign is a blessing, and it creates real change in the lives of those in need.”
As he continues his journey on and off the road, Noko proves that true endurance is not only measured in kilometres, but in compassion, resilience, and the willingness to uplift others.
Every step he takes is a step closer to fighting hunger, one community at a time. Those interested in supporting him can follow the link https://operationhunger.org.za/hunger-heros/noko-phil-matlou-campaign/ or contact him at 083 734 7490.
