Despite the overcast and cool day, with intermittent drizzle, more than 100 youths, representing their schools in the Gauteng Canoe Union League, participated in the sprint races at Germiston Lake, hosted by the Victoria Lake Canoe Club, recently.
Points are allocated to the youths on a sliding scale, for participation in the monthly school league races.
These points accumulate throughout the year and are credited to the individual, the club and the school represented, all of whom receive recognition at the annual year-end prize-giving.
Isabelle Lansdown is new to the sport year; she finished her 1 000m race in seven minutes and two seconds, earning 14 points for her log and Colin Mann School, in Germiston.
With the South African School Inter-provincial Sprint Championships taking place in May, near de Rust, in the Eastern Cape, the school league paddlers are in full training for fast hard sprint races.
