Germiston City FC played against Bedforview Saints FC at the Delville Sports Club on April 26.
The Germiston City u-17 side came up against a hard, physical Bedford Saints FC on April 26, at the Delville Sports Club.
The Germiston team, having much of the early ball, missed a number of chances in the first few minutes.
A bad defensive error in the fifth minute led to Germiston conceding their first goal.
The local team took control of the game, but were unable to break down the robust Saints’ defence.
Germiston continued to pile on the pressure and were eventually rewarded with a finely taken goal, by Daniel Zwane, in the 41st minute of the first half.
After half time Germiston continued to dominate, but were not able to capitalise on their pressure.
Twelve minutes into the second half a counter-attack from Saints was not dealt with by the City defence and resulted in a second goal by Saints.
Saints threw all their men back into defence to cope with the Germiston assault on their goal, with the Saints keeper being kept busy pulling off a number of fine saves.
The Germiston pressure finally paid off, when Lebogang Chokoe put the ball into Saints’ net.
Saints managed to hold out to the end, with a final score of 2-2.
Coach Len van Rooyen, of Germiston, was happy with the performance.
“The team showed character in coming from behind twice against the strong Saints,” he said.
The Germiston reserves, playing on the same day, demolished an ageing Saints side 9-3.
