Johannesburg walks and runs for education at the OA Tambo Liberation Walk
Education honoured at the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk.
The 2014 Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk took place at the Dries Niemandt precinct, in Kempton Park, on October 4.
Motivated by Oliver and Adelaide’s commitment to education, the theme for this year’s walk was Education Liberates.
The event, which comprised a 21.1km run, a 10km walk and a 5km fun walk, was officially opened by Ekurhuleni executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele, Oliver Tambo Junior, and Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula.
“We are humbled to be a partner in this event, to promote education, which is the legacy that Oliver Tambo left behind,” said the general manager of O R Tambo International Airport, Bongiwe Pityi.
The Liberation Walk, which O R Tambo International Airport sponsors, is held annually during the first weekend of October, which celebrates the lives of two of Africa’s most passionate freedom fighters, Oliver Reginald and his wife, Adelaide Tambo.
It embodies the ideals of unity and patriotism, which are strongly associated with the stalwarts’ legacy.
“How marvellous it is, to see young and old spirits both running to the finish line in honour of Adelaide and Oliver Tambo; it was wonderful to see people walking for education, a display of their achievements,” said CEO of the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation Mavuso Msimang.
“The ideals that OR stood for, education, the ability to challenge the status quo, and an excellent work ethic and discipline, remain relevant, even in today’s society,” said Pityi, while giving the vote of thanks.
“O R Tambo International Airport continues to consistently work hard with the communities through various educational initiatives, to prepare the country’s future leaders.”
”To this end, the airport has donated a fully equipped science laboratory and continuously provides children with school shoes and stationery packs, among other things.”
The event was well attended by South African celebrities and socialites.
The total value of this year’s prizes is estimated at R150 000 and proceeds from the event will benefit the foundation’s educational initiatives in underprivileged communities.
