Packing a punch

Great boxing action packs a punch.

In what was dubbed the super fight of the year, the Stand and Deliver box and dine event, at Emperors Palace, on Saturday, proved to be a huge success.

In association with Golden Gloves and sponsored by Chesa Nyama, the event was packed full of enough action to keep boxing fans roaring for more.

The headline fight for the evening saw Ryno “The Lion” Liebenberg and Tommy “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen battling it out for the vacant IBO Light Heavyweight World Title.

The bout was a highly entertaining affair, going the full 12 rounds.

But it was Oosthuizen who snatched victory on points (113; 117; 117), as opposed to Liebenberg’s 115; 111; 111, and lifted the belt high.

The win puts Oosthuizen in-line for bigger fights internationally.

Before this epic battle, boxing fans were treated to three undercard title fights.

In the first bout of the evening, Ashley Dlamini went up against Jasper Serone for the SA Junior Lightweight title.

Serone won the fight two minutes, 52 seconds into the seventh round, by TKO.

The second fight of the evening, between Thompson Mokwana (SA) and Richard Commey (Ghana), also didn’t make it past the seventh round.

Commey lifted the Commonwealth Lightweight Title, winning by TKO 20 seconds into round seven.

The third bout saw Dowayne Combrink and Giovanni Bushby going head-to-head.

The fighters were both looking to win the WBA Pan African Middleweight Title, but were left disappointed after the bout was declared a draw after the full 12 rounds.
