While many people are hunting for Easter eggs this weekend, numerous athletes will be sweating and charging ahead in the Two Oceans Marathon.
The world’s most beautiful marathon is scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday (April 3 and 4), and Germiston Callies has athletes who will be taking part.
“We have 49 of our athletes who will be taking part in the marathon,” said Callies’ Andre Berrange.
“Alan Robb, four times Comrades Marathon winner, will be running his 18th Two Oceans, while Victor Mhalakaza is running his tenth and will receive his permanent number if he completes the race.”
Five of the athletes; Zwelithini Vaphi, Thulane Magagula, Sibusiso Magadeni, Happyboy Mhloleli and Abram Hugo are going for silver medals.
“Of the 49 athletes, there are 40 ultra-marathon entries, which means they will be running 56km, and nine will be running the half marathon which is a 21km stretch,” explained Berrange.
“Bernadette Bainbridge (59) is the oldest entry in the half-marathon and Willem Jansen van Rensburg (62) is the oldest entry in the ultra-marathon.”
The club has a total of ten female entries.
“This year’s route excludes Chapmans Peak because of the bush fires a month ago.
“The runners will instead cross over Ou Kaapse Weg and will only see one of the oceans,” said Berrange.
“We wish all our runners the best of luck for the race.”
