Wrestlers return from Egypt

Elsburg Wrestling Club's two athletes competed at the Continental Championships in Egypt.

Elsburg Wrestling Club received great representation at the recent Continental Championships held in Egypt.

Casey van Baalen and Jacques Kriel were among those selected to represent South Africa (GCN, May 29).

Kriel showcased his talent in the cadet 69 to 74kg category and managed to bag a silver medal and van Baalen also received a silver medal in the cadet 39 to 42kg category.

“The boys did well and made all of us proud,” said the club’s secretary, Roenel de Jager.

“They put out their best and persevered through it all, especially considering the magnitude of the competition and the tough competitors they had to compete against.”

In other news, two master athletes have also been selected for the South African team which will represent the country and compete in Athens, Greece.

Johan Lombaard and Chris Sutton are the local wrestlers who are in the team which will compete at the World Masters Wrestling Championships from October 12 to 16.

Lombaard will compete in the 76 to 85kg masters category while the 85 to 97kg masters category will be contested by Sutton.

“The members are all doing well, you can see their dedication during practice and at competitions,” said de Jager.

“The club’s treasurer, Hein Els, will accompany Lombaard and Sutton. He is going to support them and we will also be routing for them back home.”
