Sporting highlights for May and June 2015
A quick look at some of 2015’s sporting thrills.
May and June’s 2015 sports throwback.
May:
- The Industrial Soccer League (ISL) held its first Top Eight Knock-out Tournament final at Hattingh Park in Primrose.
- Assumption Convent School’s first netball team competed in the Saint Stithian’s Netball Festival winning all six of their matches.
- Parkhill Gardens’ Samantha Schutte (15) was among the u-18s selected to represent South Africa at the Indoor Cricket World Cup in Australia.
- Nadia Calore, from Albemarle, was honoured at the Alberton Swimming Club’s 2014/15 gala dinner prize-giving. Calore made a clean sweep in all the events for the u-14 girls age group. Calore came first in butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle and backstroke, and also received a gold for the individual medley. She was also named overall winner.
- Unique Physique Gym sent two of its athletes, Audrey Jamneck and Charles Wagner, to attend the IFBB Central Gauteng Novice Show. Jamneck placed first in the men’s over 40 years divison whilst Wagner competed in the senior men’s u-80kg division and placed fifth.
- Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy member, Hannah Wedel, received her South African Protea colours at the South African Championships.
- Two wrestlers, Jacques Kriel (16) and Cassey Lombaard (12), from the Elsburg Wrestling Club flew to Egypt to compete in the Continental Championships.
June:
- Sunnyridge Primary School’s Jayde Symons (12) was part of the South African cricket team which flew off to Australia, in September.
- The Dinwiddie based Nippon Dojo Shotokan Karate Club members walked away with four medals, a trophy and a merit certificate at the Traditional Karate Tournament.
- Primrose’s Justin Adendorff was among the 12 Gauteng rugby players selected to compete in Mauritius. Justin and his Western Wolves team mates competed in the Afrasia Bank International Seven’s Tournament.
- Germiston Callies Harriers were well represented at the Comrades Marathon. The club had a total of 74 entrants in the marathon’s 90th year, with 53 finishing the race.
- The Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy members took part in the Kickboxing Championship and scooped 52 medals.
- Persistence and dedication towards perfecting one’s craft was rewarded at the fourth annual Ekurhuleni Sport Awards.
