Sporting highlights for November and December 2015
A quick look at some of 2015’s sporting thrills.
Most of the local sports clubs and athletes are on recess until next year, but this is how some of them performed in November and October 2015.
November:
- For the third consecutive year Henri Schoeman and Andrea Steyn took the top honours at the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championship held at Germiston Lake. Schoeman and Steyn both successfully defended their respective men’s and women’s titles.
- Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy’s head coach and founder of the club, Master Alex Tebbutt, scooped an accolade. Tebbutt (66) recently received his Hinshi Eighth Dan International Diploma from Japan.
- Marlands’ footballer, Ricardo Susanna (18), received honours for soccer at school.
- Ekurhuleni Tennis School of Excellence (ETSOE) players took part in the Gauteng East Junior Tennis Tournament final, at the Lakeside Tennis Courts in Benoni. The club’s Lethabo Bapela placed first and was crowned the boys u-11 singles tennis champion for 2015. Tadiwanashe Chipfakacha, also from ETSOE, also placed first and was named the girls u-15 singles champion for 2015.
December:
- The Industrial Soccer League (ISL) rounded off their eight-month long league at Hattingh Park.
- Shorin Kempo Karate Club’s Mbali Msomi and Rethabile Tshabalala took first places in their respective divisions at the Matshushima Kyokushin Karate Tournament, in Swaziland.
- Solheim’s Christelle Grobler was crowned the inter-provincial champion for shot put and discus at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA)’s Inter-Provincial Sub-Youth Track and Field Championships at the Germiston Stadium.
