Eagles make it two in a row with a Promotion League win

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club celebrated a Promotion League win against Actonville Spurs Cricket Club on the weekend.

Rainy skies played a role in the Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club’s Easterns Cricket League matches over the weekend.

In the club’s Promotion League match against Actonville Spurs Cricket Club at the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie on Sunday, play was delayed by an hour due to a wet surface.

The Eagles lost the toss and were sent in to bat first on the bouncy pitch.

The club was able to knock up a total of 232 runs with four wickets in hand in their allotted 50 overs.

The top batsmen were Kobus Black with 67 runs, Billy Millar with 43 runs and Jacques Jansen van Vuuren with 47 runs.

The visitors then took their turn at the crease and were bowled out for only 130 runs in their 50 overs, giving Elsburg a 102-run victory.

The day’s top bowlers were Trent Murry with five wickets for 31 runs, and Brandon du Plooy with three wickets for only a handful of runs.

“This great victory got the promotion side back on track,” said Martiens Grobler on behalf of the club.

Unfortunately, the club’s Sunday Executive League match against home-town rivals Germiston City Cricket Club was called off due to the weather.

“The match was called off as the pitch was waterlogged as we only have covers at the main oval,” Grobler explained.

“It was a great disappointment for both club as we were looking forward to the match.”

The Eagles are appealing to the community and local businesses to help with sponsorships so that the club can purchase covers for the Elsburg Sports Club pitch.
