Eagles soar in local derby
Elsburg Eagles had a fantastic weekend and remain top of the log in two leagues.
Local rivals Germiston City Cricket Club and Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club went head-to-head in their third local derby in a Sunday Executive League match at the Elspark Sports Complex on Sunday.
Germiston batted first and set a target of 156 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs.
The top bowlers for Elsburg Eagles were Len Jacobs, who took four wickets for 31 runs in seven overs, and Johan van Greunen with three wickets for 47 runs in nine overs.
Elsburg Eagles wasted no time in their reply, knocking up 157 runs for eight wickets in just 28 overs to secure a two-wicket victory and put themselves clear at the top of the league table with one more game to play.
The top batsmen for Elsburg Eagles were Darren van Tonder with 54 runs and Johan van Greunen with 30 runs.

“This was a fantastic result and an all-round good performance by all the players,” Martiens Grobler said on behalf of the club.
“Even by Fanie Gouws Jr, who is only 15 years old, to come out and score the winning runs for the team.
“It’s fantastic to see all the young players that are sticking their hand up and want to be part of the club and the team.”
In the Saturday Second League, Elsburg Eagles played an away T20 match against Eden Park Cricket Club.
Elsburg batted first and set a target of 114 runs for nine wickets in their 20 overs.
Eden Park came in to bat and got the winning runs with only one ball left in the game, knocking up 115 runs.
The top batsmen for the Elsburg Eagles were Willie Steyn with 33 runs and Garreth Hann with 17 runs.
The top bowlers for the club were Garreth Hann with one wicket for 17 runs in four overs and JD Schultz with one wicket for 22 runs in four overs.
The club’s Sunday Promotion League match did not take place as their opponents Daveyton Cricket Club did not pitch up for the match, and as a result Elsburg Eagles remain top of the log in group A.
The club will next face Nigel Cricket Club in the Saturday Second League at the Elsburg Main Oval on Saturday, and KwaThema Cricket Club at the Elsburg Main Oval in the Sunday Promotion League on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Germiston City Cricket Club had a mixed bag of results over the weekend.
The club faced Kempton Park Cricket Club in the Saturday Second League, where they lost their first T20 game of the season.
Kempton Park batted first, knocking up 163 runs, and Germiston only managed 143 runs for seven wickets in reply to lose by 20 runs.

In the Sunday Promotion League, Germiston City hosted Boksburg Cricket Club at the Germiston Sports Grounds.
Germiston batted first, scoring 265 runs for seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
“We had a good solid batting performance by Morne Jonker with 60 runs, supported by Antony Streicher with 36 runs and Dumisa Thantsa with 38 runs,” said David Ungerer of Germiston City Cricket Club.
Boskburg were bowled out for 230 runs. Germiston’s top bowlers were Donovan Smith with three wickets for 26 runs in nine overs, with Johan Botha, Johan Pienaar and Anthony Streicher all contributing two wickets each.
In the Sunday President’s League, Germiston knocked up 372 runs in their allotted 40 overs when they took on Bakerton YS Cricket Club.
“We had a marvellous batting display by Gustav Hough, who made 163 runs in combination with an excellent partnership of 180 runs between him and Cameron Ungerer, who made 69 runs not out,” said David Ungerer.
“This level of scoring set the standard for the game.”
Bakerton was bowled out for 77 runs to lose by 295 runs.
The top Germiston bowlers were Rudi le Roux with five wickets and David Ungerer and Fanie de lange with two wickets each.
