Thunder, lightning and a knock-out

Second time in the EFC hexagon proved the charm for Elsburg Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) fighter Pietie ‘Thunder’ Coxen.

Pietie ‘Thunder’ Coxen, an Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) fighter from Elsburg, promised to bring the thunder and the lightning to the EFC 68 hexagon, and that is exactly what he did.

Coxen faced HP van Staden in a welterweight fight which he won by technical knock out (TKO) three minutes and five seconds into the first round.

The GCN caught-up with Coxen after the fight, which was held at Carnival City last Saturday, to get a blow-by-blow account of the night’s action.

“I entered the ring focused, hungry to fight and determined to win,” he said.

Though Coxen came out on top, it was van Staden who opened the fight.

“He tried to confuse me with some stand-up,” Coxen explained.

“When I tagged him with a left-hand jab he shot for the takedown and got me against the cage.

“I was able to defend myself against the takedown and when van Staden left himself open I jabbed with my knee. However, he was able to grab my leg and get me onto the canvas.”

Coxen complimented van Staden on his controlled top game and wrestling base.

He credited his corner, including coach Ferid Basson from Junkyard MMA, who shouted instructions throughout the bout.

“Listening closely to the instructions from my corner I was able to reverse the situation and get on top,” explained Coxen.

“However, he got me in a pretty tight armbar which I was able to defend against and when I was on top I brought the thunder and the lightning.

“I heard the referee tell van Staden that he needed to defend himself but I just kept focused on hitting as hard and as fast as I could,” he explained.

The referee then jumped in and stopped the fight declaring Coxen the winner by TKO.

“I am so thrilled to have won and am super excited for the next fight,” said Coxen.

As in his fight against Gunther ‘The Beast’ Kalunda, Coxen suffered no injuries and plans to take just one week off before getting back into training for his next session in the EFC hexagon.

“I am aiming to fight in EFC 71 on June 23 at Carnival City,” he said.

More details on the event and the bouts will be announced soon and Coxen encourages everyone to follow EFC on Facebook for details.

Coxen thanked EFC for giving him the opportunity to fight.

“Big thanks go to my coaching team, my sponsors Manpower Services, Fit Extreme Gym, Xtreme Crime Solution, Revive Wellness Spa and BP Lambton.

“Thank you guys, without you none of this would be possible,” he said.

Pietie ‘Thunder’ Coxen will take a week off after his EFC 68 win before heading back into training.
