Back to the drawing board for Germiston

Germiston City Football Club clashed against Old Benonians in a fiery Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League fixture on Saturday.

Following an excellent win against Randburg Football Club, Germiston City Football Club played another home game at the Germiston City Sports Club where they hosted Old Benonians in the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League on May 12.

Loaded with confidence that a win at home against Old Bens could give their season a boost, Germiston quickly learnt that the Old Bens team would put up a fierce fight and a win against them proved to be a hard task.

In the first 15 minutes, Old Bens broke through a solid Germiston defence while the Germiston goalkeeper made a bold effort to stop the Old Bens striker by diving to his left.

The striker tried to push the ball past the keeper who clipped the striker’s toe and he went down.

The referee called a penalty and Old Bens went up 0-1 through the ensuing penalty.

Germiston continued to fight and displayed some good football but to their demise, they were unable to find the back of the net.

In the second half, both teams were on the attack but although Germiston players were mostly in possession of the ball, they still failed to create chances to score.

By applying immense pressure on Old Bens, Germiston left a hole in their defence and Old Bens capitalised with a counter-attack to score two more goals in the last 15 minutes.

After the game, coach Sreten Pavlovic said, “All the possession in the game is worthless without scoring goals.”

The clash ended with a 3-0 loss to Germiston

Germiston remains seventh on the log.

The reserve side played to a 3-3 draw in an enthralling game.
