Poor defence costs Germiston another win
Germiston City Football Club’s first team takes a thrashing from Old Benonians Football Club.
Germiston City Football Club and Old Benonians Football Club had one thing in common when they met in Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League, last Saturday – neither had won a match in the new season.
But this would soon change as the teams faced each other at the Germiston City Sports Grounds.
Unable to field a reserve team, Germiston took the decision to use their first team in both the reserve teams’ match and the first teams’ match, a decision which would cost the club way more than they anticipated.
In the first teams’ encounter, the home team squandered two scoring opportunities in the first ten minutes.
These missed chances would come back to haunt Germiston as the game progressed.
Indecisive defending by the club allowed Old Bens to score their first goal of the game.

Lagging behind by one goal seemed to be the motivation Germiston needed.
They pushed their way back into the match with a well-taken goal by Anthony Uzochukwu.
However, Germiston’s defence once again unravelled which allowed their opponents to find the back of the net twice before the half-time whistle.
The half-time score was 3-1 in favour of Old Bens.
Perhaps the tongue-lashing from their coach, Sreten Palvovic, inspired them because Germiston came into the second half eager to score an early goal to keep them in the game.

However, after twenty minutes of sustained pressure, Germiston could not breakdown the Old Bens defence. Their flair and eagerness soon evaporated.
Germiston’s barrage on the Old Bens defence didn’t seem to faze the visitors as they continued to search for the opportune time to launch a counter-attack.
They were rewarded for their patience with a fourth goal.
Despite a last ditch attempt by Germiston to reduce the deficit, the match ended 4-1 in Old Bens’ favour.
Germiston fared far better in the reserve teams’ clash. They beat the Old Bens 6-4.
The top scorer of the match was Uzochukwu, with three goals, followed by Thabiso Nkosi with two and Junior Marimo with one.
