Simmer back to winning ways

Soweto Eagles Rugby Club proves a gruelling challenge for Germiston Simmer Rugby Club in Senior Grand Challenge.

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club started the second round of the Senior Grand Challenge with a win when they beat Soweto Eagles Rugby Club 15-10 in a home game at Germiston Stadium last Saturday.

The home team were first on the scoreboard with a try by Johan Roodt early on in the game.

The success of the try came from a well-practised move of the line-out, by Simmer, undertaken close to the try line.

However, Simmer’s momentum quickly took a blow, as the physically challenging game saw Louis Britz and Renier Bracey suffer injuries well into the first half.

A Soweto Eagles Rugby Club player fell right into Eben Barnard’s arms during a tackle last Saturday in the Senior Grand Challenge at Germiston Stadium.

Soweto used this opportunity to get back into the game, scoring two tries, leading the half-time score to 10-5 in their favour.

Seeking to seal the deal in the second half, Soweto charged onto the pitch with great attacks, forcing Simmer to fight hard to defend their try line continuously.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, an under pressure Simmer struck a change in their play when Eugene van der Merwe manoeuvred across the field, past Soweto’s defenders, to score a clever try by taking a gap on the blindside.

This Senior Grand Challenge fixture saw a physically taxing game between Germiston Simmer Rugby Club and Soweto Eagles Rugby Club last Saturday at Germiston Stadium.

Damian Eiman completed a successful conversion to put Simmer in the lead.

Eiman returned to centre stage for a successful penalty kick, setting Simmer up for victory.

Once they took a five-point lead, Simmer kept a tight backline, not allowing their opponents through.

The final score was 15-10 in favour of Simmer.

Van der Merwe was named man of the match for displaying grit and drive throughout the game.
