Disappointing end to the season for Germiston

Germiston City FC took on Benoni Northerns in the last match of the season.

Germiston City Football Club had a busy time last week with two matches.

Last Tuesday night they took on Kempton Park at Kempton.

The first half did not go according to plan and Germiston went into half-time 1-0 down.

However, a hat trick by Thakudswa Jack in the exciting second half saw Germiston beat their rivals 3-2 to extend their unbeaten run to four games.

Unfortunately their run came to end last Saturday when they went head to head with Benoni Northerns at the Germiston City Sports Club for their last game of the season.

Starting well, Germiston kept control for the first 15 minutes of the match, narrowly missing a number of scoring opportunities.

Thereafter, Northerns took control and a defensive mix up in the Germiston half saw Northerns take the lead.

A few minutes later, what seemed a good head of the ball was seen differently by the referee, who awarded Northerns a free kick just outside Germiston’s 18-yard box.

The kick was deflected off the wall, leaving the keeper stranded and giving Northerns a 2-0 advantage.

Germiston held out until half-time and looked to the second half to up their game.

Kennet Paile (blue) tussles for the ball with his Benoni Northerns counterpart during the teams’ clash at the Germiston City Sports Club last Saturday, while Cleopus Marino comes in to assist.

Going into the second half, Northerns were soon on the attack again and took a 3-0 lead.

At this point, Germiston just wanted the game to end but more was to come.

Northerns took hold of their advantage and scored another two goals before Germiston got a consolation goal by Kennet Paile.

But it was not over, Northerns scored another goal to rub salt into Germiston’s wounds.

The final score was Benoni Northerns 6, Germiston 1.

The reserve side, fielded mainly of players from the u-17 side, were well beaten 8-1 to end the Germiston’s Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League season on a low note.
