Germiston paddlers enjoy the Eastern Cape river

The 80km marathon spanned over a two-day period.

Paddlers from Germiston took part in the Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock on October 7 and 8.

Several paddlers from Gauteng headed to Cradock in the Eastern Cape to gather at the Grassridge Dam for the start of a fun-filled river race.

Denmark’s Susan Lutzner, partnered with her friend from Germiston’s Victoria Lake Canoe Club, Rod Penaluna and experienced steerer and coach at the canoe club, Loveday Zondi.

Despite the challenging white waters with weirs, shuts and sharp S bends, Lutzner enjoyed her first 80km Fish River Marathon.

The trio finished the 80kms in 5:58.

They came in 6th under the K3 (three-man kayak) and 9th under the sub-veteran categories.

Ryno Armdorff and Peter Chissano. also members of the Germiston Canoe Club finished their race comfortably, crossing the finish line in 5:53 as the 7th in the K2 (two-man kayak) category.

Other local members of the canoe club who finished the race included Roeloff Greyling with Anthony Welsh, as well as Richard Cele and young Nicolaas Swart.
