Vosloorus NPO launch first annual tournament

Despite the low participation turnout, the tournament was a success and can only improve.

iNhlamulo Foundation launched the first annual Squad Games Tournament on November 5, at Ext 14 sports ground, Vosloorus near Thelle Mogoerane Hospital.

The tournament hosted both football and netball competitions. At least three football teams participated in the top three including Lions FC and Black Poison FC and FC Rangers. While in netball teams included The Equalizers NC and Silver Ferns.

Black Poison FC has crowned champions of the first annual Squad Games after crushing Lions FC 3–0 during the final.

Siyabonga Maduna scored the opening goal, followed by the second goal from Ayanda Mazibuko in the first half. He closed off the game with a brace after scoring his second goal in the second half.

Champion coach of Black Poison FC, Loyisa ‘Zizou’ Mtambo, said for the first game they struggled to play because of the field, but as time went by they were able to play their usual way and were able to win.

“The tournament organisers were friendly, although it was their first tournament. It was well-organised. Everything was on time and the referees were on point. We enjoyed it,” said Mtambo.

In netball, Equalizers NC won 16-12 against Silver Ferns NC.

Silver Ferns NC head coach said although they lost, they enjoyed the tournament.

She said the games were fair. They appreciate iNhlamulo Foundation’s support towards local sports as they usually have one tournament a year on June 16.

“These events are important because most young girls would rather participate in other things because they believe netball is less accessible.”

The head coach of Equalizers NC, Nonhlanhla Zikalala said they performed well, but there is room for improvement.

“When you compete in tournaments there is always something to learn. We played well but struggled to control the ball in the midfield,” said Zikalala.

According to the founder of iNhlamulo Foundation, Siyamthanda Ngalwa, despite the low participation turnout, the tournament was a success and can only improve.

“It was my first tournament. It is hard for people to trust something that they have never seen played. People want to see it happen before taking part.

“Another challenge we faced was that the tournament clashed with league games, which also resulted in the lack of participants because some teams were taking part in the league already.”

She said their interest as an organisation is to provide edutainment for the youth and senior citizens.

The first prize winners won gold medals and trophies and the second prize winner received silver medals.
