Athletes prepare for National Championships at Germiston Stadium

Central Gauteng Athletics hosted its fourth league meeting.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted its fourth league meeting on February 18 at the Germiston Stadium.

More than 800 athletes entered the league, which was supported by athletes from sister provinces and neighbouring countries to test their performances and readiness for the National Championships scheduled late in March.

The track and field programme included a race walking league.

The girls’ U16 5km walk was dominated by Masai athletes.

They gave great performances to claim all the podium positions, with Thato Rammalo leading the pack in first place in a time of 29:36.

Keneilwe Mhlare secured second place, clocking 30:40, and third position went to Owami Nzimande in a time of 31:27.

The U18 women’s 800m race was dominated by Ntombi Gumede of United when she showcased great athleticism with her stable run to secure first place in 2:23.

In the second position, with just a slight time difference from Ntokozo, was her teammate Kamogelo Makgoka clocking 2:24.

The third position was taken by Courtney Sole, who finished strong in 2:24.

“Gumede and Makgoka again dominated the U18 women’s 1 500m event, maintaining the first two podium positions in a time of 05:12 and 05:12, respectively.

“Third place was secured by Lihle Kabini of Thembisa, clocking 05:15,” said CGA communications intern, Nongcebo Siziba.

“Another phenomenal and challenging event was the senior men’s 3000m steeplechase, where Jean Mouton maintained his position from the first lap to finish in a time of 09:36.”

The senior men’s and senior women’s 100m sprints did not disappoint.

In the senior women’s 100m event, visitors from Curro and Mozambique secured the podium positions, with Michelle Mofomme leading in a time of 12.74, followed by her teammate, Karabo Legodi, in a time of 13.05.

Ana Da Rocha Faz Bem Iaia from Mozambique took third position in a time of 13.20.

“In a post-interview with Da Rocha, she indicated that she is grateful to be allowed to compete in CGA’s leagues since the start of the 2023 track and field season.

“The province can attract international athletes who give us positive feedback about the quality of our athletes and the presentation of our leagues,” said Siziba.

“Among the greatest field events was the senior women’s hammer event, where Leandri Geel claimed first place with an amazing throw of 63.14. In second place was Maringa Greyling with 50.96,” said Siziba.
