Run/Walk For Life returns to Germiston with local branch reopening

Whether someone is starting from scratch or working towards completing a marathon, the programme is designed to meet them where they are.

Run/Walk for Life is reopening its Germiston branch in Parkhill Gardens.

The branch officially re-launched on October 15 last year, marking the return of a programme that has been part of the Germiston community since 2005.

Known for its inclusive and supportive approach, Run/Walk For Life continues to attract people of all ages and fitness levels who are looking to improve their health in a social, outdoor environment.

“Unlike traditional gym programmes, Run/Walk For Life is a lifestyle programme focused on getting people off the couch and moving their bodies outdoors. It offers a sense of community where members motivate one another and stay accountable to their personal fitness goals,” said coach Motseoa Sefatsa.

Founded in 1983 by a medical doctor, the programme has grown into one of South Africa’s leading fitness and weight management initiatives.

It remains the only exercise programme of its kind approved by the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, reinforcing its credibility and scientifically based approach.

While walking and running are central to the programme, it is not a conventional running club. Members receive structured guidance and training plans tailored to their individual fitness levels and goals.

Whether someone is starting from scratch or working towards completing a marathon, the programme is designed to meet them where they are.

A key strength of Run/Walk For Life is its focus on personal goal setting. Members train in supervised groups of similar ability, ensuring that no one feels out of place or overwhelmed.

This supportive structure has helped thousands of South Africans build sustainable fitness habits over the past four decades.

Leading the re-opened Germiston branch is coach Sefatsa, who brings both experience and empathy to the role.

Having started her own journey with the programme in 2021, she understands the challenges many beginners face.

“It was a very slow start for me, and I had to overcome certain mindset barriers. That’s why I can relate to our members.

“The beauty of this programme is that there is no age limit, and all fitness levels are welcome. In fact, the more unfit you are, the more exciting it is for us to help you grow,” shared Sefatsa.

Training sessions take place three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Parkhill Gardens, starting at 17:15.
