The Lowveld Canoe Club hosted its renowned 30km Trac Lowveld Crocodile Canoe Marathon, celebrated as one of the country’s toughest river races.

Known for technical rapids and unexpected obstacles, the course spans from Kwena Dam’s outflow to Terblanche Langoed farm, testing even seasoned paddlers with overhanging trees, tight turns and varying water levels.

“This river is dynamic and unpredictable, making it a technical challenge for paddlers. Local organisers work hard to clear channels, but the river keeps changing,” explained Jennie Dallas, PR Liaison for the Gauteng Canoe Union.

This year’s marathon saw 45 entrants with only 35 finishing the race, as some paddlers faced equipment damage that forced them to withdraw.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club was among the teams represented, with Uwe Schmidthaus and Richard Cele completing the race in 2 hours 48 minutes and 2 hours 52 minutes, respectively.

Bedfordview paddlers Rory Attridge and Chad Andrews finished with strong times of 2 hours 39 minutes and 2 hours 41 minutes.

Top honours went to Clinton Cook, who finished in 1 hour 59 minutes, followed closely by Siseko Ntondini of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club, crossing 30 seconds later.

The event, dating back to 1962, is supported by TRAC, which has also brought members of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club to participate as part of a development initiative.

“TRAC’s ongoing support keeps this historic and unique race alive,” said Dallas.
