Ryno Hendrikz, head of sport at AHG, said the rivalry between the two schools spans multiple sports, including athletics, netball, and now rugby.

“For rugby, the scorelines showed a dominant performance from our side. It was a great feeling competing against Germiston High on the rugby field. We know the quality they have in netball and athletics, but rugby gave our boys some bragging rights for the year.
“We focus on quality practice sessions to give our rugby players a strong foundation for the league ahead. We had three friendly matches, and the results looked good for us,” said Hendrikz.
He also spoke about the new structure of the 2026 league, which adds an exciting twist.

“This year, the league has a Group 1 and a Group 2. AHG will compete in Group 1 against schools like Hoërskool Roodepoort, Hoërskool Goudrif, and Hoërskool Die Adelaar. We hope all three of our teams reach the playoffs and qualify for the Noordvaal Cup.”
Reflecting on 2025, Hendrikz highlighted the school’s rugby achievements.

“It was a strong year for sports, but rugby really stood out. Our U15 team, coached by Van den Berg, won the Golden Lions League and the Noordvaal Cup.
“Our U17 team reached the semi-finals but unfortunately lost to Hoërskool Roodepoort. Our first team finished in fifth place, but it was a young squad.
“The foundation was laid in 2025, and we are working hard to improve our performance in 2026. We hope to move up in the league this year,” said Hendrikz.
Germiston High School coach Blessed Nyatsanza commended the boys for their hard work and for taking the defeat in stride.
“Our focus remains on practising our structures, playing our phases, and ultimately winning games,” said Nyatsanza.
He expressed optimism about the future of rugby.

“The future of rugby looks very promising. Players are starting rugby as early as five years old at schools and clubs, and with unions like the Golden Lions Rugby Union getting more involved, the pathway ahead is definitely bright.

“For the U17 juniors, the team is still finding its rhythm, but with the guidance of players like Winner, Ayanda, and Mpendulo, they will come right. With the first team, I was very pleased with the forwards,” said Nyatsanza.
“They played brilliantly in defence, with players like Sam, Pule, and Gerry making first-time tackles; it was awesome. We did struggle with our lineouts, which is an area we will work on.
“My backline didn’t quite come to the party as expected, but that’s rugby; sometimes you do well, sometimes you don’t. Overall, the boys played well.

“Tactically, I asked the forwards to run through the gaps, and it worked. Winner, the junior captain, was Man of the Match for his brilliant tackles, and the first team captain was Man of the Match for leading the forwards.
“Above all, I would like to thank our principal for supporting the sport, our teachers, the SGB, and most importantly, the students of GHS,” said Nyatsanza.
