Four people died and six others were left critically injured on Thutong Road between Katlehong and Vosloorus shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 3.

According to William Ntladi of the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services (EEMS), two of the critically injured passengers were still trapped inside one of the vehicles, a white BMW, by the time paramedics arrived at the scene.

“It was soon after midnight and it was almost pitch dark and cold when we arrived. We had to summon rescue teams with specialised equipment to free the victims from the mangled wreckage,” explained Ntladi who added that three of the passengers in the BMW sedan were declared dead at the scene.

Ntladi said one of the dead was a passenger in the second vehicle, a Toyota Conquest hatchback, while the injured were rushed to the nearby Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus.

The accident happened around 3am on the Sunday morning.

The road was closed for traffic for the duration on the accident till investigations were concluded on scene by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Police (EMPD) officers.
