Driver of cloned vehicle shoots at cops

The injured officer was rushed to an unnamed hospital for medical attention.

A metro police officer from the Equestrian Unit narrowly escaped death when a suspect he had tried to arrest wrestled his service firearm from him and shot him in the neck during a struggle for the gun.

The suspect, who was driving a VW Golf 5 sedan, had earlier been waved over by the Metro police in Etwatwa for a routine check, but instead the driver refused to stop and led the cops in a high-speed chase through the streets of the township until he was finally cornered at the corners of Chris Hani and Madikizela streets.

During the attempt to arrest him, the aggressive driver then wrestled with one of the officers and in the process managed to grab the officer’s firearm during which time a shot rang out. The partner of the shot officer then retaliated swiftly and shot the suspect, who later succumbed to his injuries.

A preliminary inspection of the VW Golf revealed signs of the vehicle being cloned and further investigations were, at the time of going to press, still under way to determine the status of the suspected duplicated vehicle.

The injured officer was rushed to an unnamed hospital for medical attention.
