Editor’s response to letter

Dear Dr Matobako,

It is regrettable that after you and I spoke on the telephone, and after I had agreed to discuss this matter with you in person, you decided to switch your cellphone off and not return my call as requested.

Firstly my comment piece was not about your murdered nephew Tshepo and for you to accuse me of trivialising your nephew’s death is in fact far from the truth. Neither did I refer to his tragic death as “the slightest provocation”.

It is unfortunate that you did not allow me the opportunity to explain the context of my comment to you and your family. My deep-felt condolences to you and your family on the death of your nephew.
