Retiring teachers under the banner of Katlehong Preschool Teachers Association handed over the reigns to the generation on September 10.
The handover took place at DH Williams Hall in Spruitview.
In attendance were parents, learners and former students who attended various preschools under the association.
Anna Mapaseka Sibeko, Ruth Rabak, Maletsatsi Vilakazi and Frida Mathusi, who worked at different pre-schools under the association since 1986, handed over the reigns to Lutha Nkosi, Selapelo Modiba, Nomasonto Vilakazi and Mildred Sibeko.
Sibeko was very emotional seeing the way people appreciate the job she has done for the community.
“I started in 1986 when I was 40 years old, now I’m 70. The reason why we have been successful in everything that we did as the association is that we worked hard and supported one another in everything we did. If the young generation that is taking over can work as hard and hand in hand as we did, they will achieve even than we did. And I would like to encourage them to work hard,” said Sibeko.
One of the former students at Zakhele Day Care, Nzimazana Mbele said that she never met a teacher like Sibeko in her entire life. “I am what I am today because of Sibeko. She gave me the best foundation. Today I am in possession of a BA degree in business management, thanks to the words of wisdom she instilled in me at a young age,” said Mbele.
The retiring teachers were awarded certificates of appreciation and also given presents such as mugs, blankets and vouchers from Mr Price.
The chairperson of the association, Nurse Kamanga, said that the four retiring teachers were the most dedicated people she had ever seen.
“I would like to thank them for the job they have done in making the association what it is today and I wish the next generation that will take over will behave in the same way,” said Kamanga.
Everyone who spoke at the function, including teachers, parents and former students, all sang the praises of the retired teachers and wished the teachers who were taking over good luck.
In terms of entertainment there was music, poetry and different kinds of dance from learners of various preschools.
After the event guests were treated to lunch.
