SANBS calls on Nigel residents to give the gift of life this festive season
The South African National Blood Service appeals to Nigel residents to donate blood this December, as hospitals face increased demand during the festive period
The South African Blood Service is calling on Nigel residents to make a life-saving difference by donating blood.
The organisation says blood supplies traditionally decline during the December holidays when many regular donors travel. Yet, hospitals continue to experience high demand due to road accidents, surgeries, and medical emergencies.
According to Katrina Makamo, donor relations practitioner at SANBS, the festive period is one of the most critical times for blood donations.
“We often experience severe shortages during the holiday season because people are busy or away on vacation, but emergencies don’t take a holiday because patients still need blood.
“We are appealing to Nigel residents to find time to donate and help save lives. The South African Blood Service needs to collect at least 5000 units of blood daily to meet the country’s medical needs. It is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give this festive season,” she said.
Makamo emphasised that the donation process is simple, quick and safe. Donors complete a short health questionnaire and have their blood pressure and iron levels checked before giving blood.
“Residents who wish to donate must be between 16 and 75 years old, weigh at least 50kg, be in good health, and lead a low-risk lifestyle. Donors should not have given blood in the last 56 days. The process takes less than 30 minutes, and our trained professionals ensure your comfort and safety throughout.”
Makamo also encouraged residents to see blood donation as a community act of kindness during this season of giving.
“We urge the people of Nigel and the surrounding areas to visit their nearest donor centre or mobile drive. Your small act of generosity could save a life this Christmas.
“We would also like to remind donors to rest and avoid strenuous activities after donating. The body naturally replaces the donated blood within 56 days, allowing donors to return for another session after that period,” she said.
