Heidelberg Hospital joined communities around the world in marking World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 to 7, combining breastfeeding education with a heartwarming newborn clothes drive to support mothers and their babies.

The hospital’s activities, which have been taking place since August 3, included educational sessions, demonstrations and presentations designed to equip mothers with information about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding.

Mothers were encouraged to practice exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of their babies’ lives, with health professionals highlighting the nutritional and health benefits of breast milk.

Mapula Makgoba, a dietician, said breastfeeding provides babies with essential nutrients while helping to strengthen their immune systems.

“Breastfeeding is perfect for nutrition. It contains an ideal mix of vitamins, proteins and fat. Breast milk also delivers antibodies that help babies fight off illnesses. It supports brain development and can improve a child’s learning abilities,” she said.

The campaign was strengthened by the newborn clothes drive, which saw mothers and their babies receiving baby-care hampers, adult cosmetic packs and a variety of baby clothes.

The donations were made possible through the generosity of F&S Filling Station (Sasol Nigel) and The Garden Social Services in Jameson Park. The initiative provided practical support to mothers while highlighting the importance of community involvement in promoting the wellbeing of newborns.

Heidelberg Hospital extended its gratitude to the organisations, stakeholders and staff members who contributed towards the ongoing Newborn Clothes Drive and helped make the World Breastfeeding Week activities meaningful for mothers and their babies.
