Temperatures are expected to surge into the weekend, at a maximum of 30 degrees.

The organisation has advised people to avoid walking their dogs in the heat of day and rather wait until temperatures drop, as tarred roads or hot pavements can damage the animals’ paws. NEVER leave your animals unattended in a car as overheating will result in death!

Spokesperson Christine Kuch says chained or confined animals are especially at risk.

“It is extreme weather. People who own animals need to have additional care, especially in connection with shade and water. Just don’t take them with you in a vehicle unless it’s necessary. Working animals such as security dogs or donkeys used for transport need to be monitored carefully to avoid dehydration, fatigue and even heatstroke.”

Kuch has advised residents to contact a local SPCA and provide details so that assistance can be given in these and similar circumstances.

She says, “Please carry the number of the local SPCA with you at all times, even if the issue is not yours to handle, pass on details to the relevant SPCA.”
