Illegal hunters’ greyhounds kill pregnant ewe

Six dogs takes down grey rhebuck in front of horrified residents and kills it there and then.

Three illegal hunters were arrested and their 14 undernourished greyhounds confiscated after the dogs killed a pregnant grey rhebuck (see more on these antelopes here) this morning. The incident happened in the Eendracht farming area outside Heidelberg.
The ewe with a ram frequented this area for the past two years where Douw Venter and Zona Schutte made sure that there was always something to eat for the wild life on their farm.
The couple are devastated after they witnessed the killing of the ewe by six dogs at around 09:00 this morning. They ran to it’s rescue but it was already too late.
Two men followed the dogs and started to shout at the couple when they confiscated the carcass. Douw phoned the police and Spaarwater Community Patrollers Forum and soon vehicles were flooding the area in pursuit of the culprits.

The army also joined in and soon the three hunters, their vehicle and more dogs were found near the train station in Spaarwater.
Douw says it was good to see the quick response of all relevant parties and how everyone worked together. “These illegal hunting practices must stop. It has been going on far to long and these people with their dogs are endangering our livestock.
Heidelberg SPCA (see there face book page here) confiscated the dogs and the three men were arrested by police.
