WARNING: Gruesome picture of animal neglect!

Dog with chain embedded in her neck dumped on Heidelberg SPCA's doorstep.

A Border Collie crossbreed dog of approximately three years old had to be put down due to a chain that has grown into her neck. According to Ans Botha (inspector) the dog must have been living with the chain (that was obviously too tight) for months, maybe even years.

The chain was so badly embedded into the dog’s flesh that she was prevented from eating or drinking. She was in such a bad state that the vet decided that it was better to put her down.

The poor animal was chained to the SPCA’s front gate early on Saturday morning before they opened. One of the workers (who stays at the SPCA) saw the animal and rushed to help her. He could hear a vehicle speeding away but unfortunately did not see the make or colour.

Anyone with information on this incident can phone Heidelberg SPCA on 016 342 4114. Ans is appealing to residents to report animal cruelty.
