Gas cylinders pulled from burning building
Fire causes extensive damage to building in Rensburg.
A building at the corner of AG Visser and Loveday Street in Rensburg caught alight on January 16.
Several shops and a church are operating from the premises with residential flats and Laerskool AG Visser situated across the road.
The fire started at the back of the church, which has been extensively damaged.
Lesedi’s Fire and Rescue Services were on the scene along with fire department chief Clement Masinge.
According to reports, a church leader was at the church at 09:00 and everything was in order. Further reports indicate that the fire started at about 10:00.
Masinge said, “When I arrived on the scene I saw the fire at the back of the building. I got into my safety clothing and went into the building.
“I saw various gas cylinders lying on the floor and saw one cylinder on fire. I pulled the cylinders out of the building to ensure they do not explode and cause further damage.”
While the firefighters were able to safely extinguish the blaze, there are signs the roof has collapsed and the building is not safe.
“There will be an extensive investigation into the cause of the fire. There is a great concern the building may collapse at any time,” concluded Masinge.
