In recent years, the percentage of new automobiles sold in Europe and the United States with manual transmissions has dropped dramatically. In 2000, 89-95% of all new automobiles sold in Europe had manual transmissions.

However, in the first half of 2023, just 32% of new automobiles were sold with a manual transmission. Similarly, less than 1% of cars in the United States have had manual transmissions over the last two years.

The decrease in manual vehicle sales is due to increasing traffic conditions in cities, the availability of more economical automatic vehicles, and an increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales.

Manual automobiles continue to be in high demand in South Africa and other emerging economies. According to Lightstone data, in the first nine months of 2023, 49% of light vehicle sales in South Africa were manual.

Affordability, dependability, driving preferences, and maybe the sense of superior control or fit for specific terrains could all contribute to manual cars’ continued appeal in South Africa.

However, this is increasingly changing, even in South Africa. According to the data, 77% of cars sold in South Africa ten years ago were manual transmission vehicles.
