New president is ready to conquer

The Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry was proud to inaugurate its first black president at the chamber's 107th AGM.

The newly elected president of the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EGCCI), Dr Roney Ndala, is the first black person to head the 107-year-old organisation.

He says organisations should embrace the changing world of business. Ndala joined EGCCI in 2018 when he was elected to the executive committee and has served on the committee since then.

He explains his role is to champion the movements and activities of the chamber, with everyone looking at him to carry the vision of EGCCI. The 75-year-old businessman owns a company which specialises in leadership, team development, and coaching.

With his experience working with big organisations, Ndala says he learnt it was best to assess what has previously worked or not before making changes in a new role.

“If not, that would be a recipe for disaster. I will attempt to follow in the footsteps of the former president.”

On the issues of the EGCCI, he states the chamber not accommodating small businesses is a challenge in itself.

“If we are not taking care of them, who will? They are going to become marginalised in our communities if we do not make an effort to include them.”

He adds the chamber does not have a large membership of big companies as it should have. He continues by saying that load-shedding poses an issue as well.

“We have two councillors that are strategically placed.”

Ndala emphasised businesses should not only use the chamber for load-shedding purposes; they should let it serve the interests of their businesses.

He added local businesses must join the chamber so that the EGCCI can be in a position to serve them too.

“We try to align with the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) on behalf of the businesses, but there is so much more we can do with their support,” Ndala said.

Ndala expressed the EGCCI is the best chamber nationally as, among other qualities, they are consistent and disciplined in their efforts.

He says the role of the EGCCI is to work with businesses to address issues that affect them, such as bringing the business closer to the CoE.

This is to ensure the CoE is aware and knows that businesses are the biggest customers. Without them, there is no revenue.

Ndala states that exposure and the chance to use significant resources are some advantages of joining EGCCI.

Outside of his chamber duties, Ndala enjoys reading, gardening, and motivating and developing employees in companies.

He describes himself as a quick starter who can resolve problems. He is married to Mabel, and they have three daughters.

Ndala’s passion is living a life centred around Jesus Christ, as he believes that is where he gains his strength.
