Lesedi netball hosts fundraising tournament

A fundraising netball tournament at Ext 23 Stadium in Ratanda brought local players together while strengthening efforts to grow and sustain netball in the Lesedi area.

HEIDELBERG – The Lesedi Netball fundraising tournament, hosted on January 24 at Ext 23 Stadium in Ratanda, brought together local teams, supporters, and community members in a show of unity and passion for the sport.

The tournament, which attracted players from across Lesedi, served both as a competitive sporting event and a fundraising initiative aimed at supporting netball development programmes.

With a player registration fee of R20, proceeds from the event will be used to acquire training equipment and support the overall operations of Lesedi Netball.

Chairperson Lebo Tutubala said the tournament marked a significant step in building sustainable structures for netball in the area.

“This tournament was about more than just playing netball. It was about creating opportunities, giving players exposure, and laying a foundation for the future of the sport in Lesedi.

“The turnout and support we received show that the community believes in what we are trying to build,” she said.

Secretary Shiela Mazibuko highlighted the role of netball in empowering participants beyond the court.

“Netball helps young girls, women, and even male players to build confidence, discipline, and teamwork. These are skills they carry with them into their daily lives.

“Events like this tournament help us raise funds, and also raise awareness. We encourage residents and businesses to continue supporting local sport because it plays a vital role in youth development,” she said.

Mazibuko added that since its establishment, Lesedi Netball has achieved several milestones, including a strong working relationship with the Sedibeng Netball Federation.

“In 2025, three girls and four boys represented Lesedi at the Soncini Games, which is a breakthrough for the organisation. However, limited access to suitable training venues, resources, and funding continues to affect operations.

“We have engaged with the Lesedi Local Municipality regarding the repair of the existing netball courts and the development of new facilities. We are also appealing to local businesses for sponsorships and partnerships,” she said.
