Lesedi SEZ project reaches construction milestone

Construction preparations for the Special Economic Zone moved forward after labour approval, with the community urged to follow official recruitment processes.

Implementing bulk infrastructure services for the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project in the Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) reached a milestone, with construction preparations now underway.

According to a public notice issued on January 23, the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, the SEZ, the LLM, and the appointed main contractor, MP Infrastructure, are overseeing the project.

The initiative involves installing essential bulk infrastructure, including water, sewer and electricity services, in preparation for the construction of two industries expected to invest in the Lesedi area.

The LLM confirmed the approval of the required work permit from the Department of Labour. This clearance allows the contractor to start preparing for construction, including processes linked to the appointment of small, medium and micro enterprises.

LLM spokesperson Katleho Seaga said the project is a critical step for unlocking economic opportunities for the region.

“The approval of the permit is a milestone for the Special Economic Zone project. This phase focuses on installing bulk infrastructure, which is fundamental in creating an enabling environment for investment, job creation and local economic development in the Lesedi Local Municipality.

“In addition to the main contractor, SEZ representatives and project consultants have finalised the appointment of a community liaison officer, who will be central in facilitating communication between the project team and the community,” he said.

Seaga urged community members not visit the project site until a formal notice outlining the process and requirements to submit CVs is issued.

“We appeal to residents to wait for the official recruitment notice, which will outline how and when CVs may be submitted. This is to ensure that the recruitment process remains fair, transparent and orderly,” he said.
