Heidelberg firefighters help in Canada

Thabani Moloi and his crew member, Phello Mofokeng will be helping out in Alberta, Canada.

Local firefighter Thabani Moloi has joined 200 Working on Fire Programme’s firefighters to help battle raging infernos in Canada.

Moloi went to Canada in 2021 to help put out fires.

He joined the programme at the age of 19 at the Heidelberg Fire Station base.

‘‘I have experience in working with other international firefighters on massive fire incidents,” explained Moloi.

“It must be noted that lives and properties are obliterated by fast-moving fires. We have been trained and orientated about the plan to combat the fires.’’

He hails from Ratanda township.

Thabani Moloi is helping to battle the raging Canadian fires.

Moloi said it is an opportunity to showcase South Africa’s capabilities to battle fires. His team will be deployed to the Alberta province, which is experiencing raging fires.

‘‘We also deal with ground fires unlike here in South Africa. The team is up for the task. This will ensure we don’t disappoint the host country.”

When duty calls, Moloi said he must respond positively.

He has 10 years’ experience in veld and forest fire fighting. He is joined by fellow crew member Phello Mofokeng.
