Shooting in Ratanda claims 2 more lives

One victim was shot in front of the shop, and the other inside it.

The Ratanda community was rocked for a second successive week by another shooting that claimed the lives of two men.

The latest incident occurred on March 1 at about 20:50.

Criminals gunned down prominent businessman Happy Nyawuza and an unknown shop owner at a spaza shop in Ratanda.

According to Sergeant Moss Maluleke, the corporate communications officer for the Ratanda SAPS, it appears both victims were gunned down during load-shedding on Mtshali Street.

One victim was shot in front of the shop, the other inside it.

The perpetrators fled on foot, and the police have made no arrests yet.

The Ratanda SAPS recovered several cartridges on the scene.

At present, there is no indication of how many culprits were involved.

This double murder is the second shooting in the past two weeks where prominent members of the same organisation were shot and killed.

On February 29, criminals gunned down Mandla Ncoco at his home in Ratanda.

Nyawaza (chairperson) and Ncoco (treasurer) were leaders and part of the newly formed Ratanda Mazibuya Kazi Spaza Shops, Business Forum, established at a meeting on February 7.

The motive for the latest shooting is unknown, and the Ratanda SAPS are investigating.

“We ask the community to come forward to assist in the investigations of the recent shootings,” said Maluleke.
