Nigel in a tryfest against VUT

Nigel scores a runaway victory against VUT.

Nigel RC was in a scoring mood when they hosted the Vaal University of Technology in the Valke Merlin League.

From the onset of the contest, it was clear Nigel wanted to run with the ball.

Nigel scored the first of their 13 tries within two minutes. Then it was just a process of VU defending their try line as well as possible.

The halftime score was 45–0. Nigel scored seven tries and five conversions.

In the second half, Nigel scored another six tries with three conversions. VUT got a consolation on two tries, with one conversion.

Nigel dominated every phase of the match. They dominated in the scrums and pushed VUT off the ball at nearly every scrum.

VUT was more competitive in the lineouts and attempted to run with the ball whenever an opportunity presented itself.

The teams played the match in good spirit, with no cards handed out during the match.

There were 17 scrums awarded in the match, with Nigel feeding the scrum eight times and VUT nine times. The lineout count was 18. Both teams threw in nine times.

They had 14 penalties in the match. Nigel received 10 penalties and VUT four. In the first half, Nigel did not concede one penalty.

The match also saw 35 rucks and six mauls. There were also 22 kicks from hand with Nigel kicking eight times and VUT 13.

Nigel scorers were tries: Reginald Thabethe, Adriaan van Taak, Graig Pienaar, Ruan Nell, Julian Myburgh, Khomotso Mokwele (2), Marthunis Fourie (3) and Junaide Seedat (3). Conversions: PJ de Beer (1) and Junaide Seedat (6).
