Conservationist (96) receives lifetime achievement award

Stan Madden has set a high standard which has inspired people to appreciate, enjoy and care for nature.

Wildlife and environment society of South Africa (WESSA) awarded Stan Madden for his contribution to nature conservation.

A wildlife stalwart and well-known local ornithologist, Madden was presented with the WESSA lifetime achievement award by John Wesson, CEO of WESSA Northern Areas, at a function at the Marievale Nature Reserve on April 13.

The award honours people for their outstanding contribution to environmental conservation and/or education in South Africa at national or international level in an exceptional and sustainable manner.

Madden (96) has been involved in nature conservation for over 60 years and is mainly responsible for the formation of the Marievale Nature Reserve, formerly the Marievale Bird Sanctuary, and for the Blesbokspruit Ramsar status awarded to the reserve which recognises the wetland as one of international importance.

Over the years he has organised many bird identification courses on the East Rand for young and old alike and has given talks and slide shows outlining the development and progress at the Marievale Nature Reserve.
He is a founding member of the Springs/Nigel WESSA branch started over 50 years ago and still serves on the committee.

“Stan has set a high standard which has inspired people to appreciate, enjoy and care for nature. We salute you, Stan,” said Dee Johnson.

Gary Freeman, Rob Crosby, Alex Martinuzzi and Stan Madden, who received the lifetime achievement award.
