Nigel overpowers Elsburg

Nigel Rugby Club hosted Elsburg Rugby Club in the Valke Merlin League at the John Vorster Stadium on Saturday.

Nigel’s first team walked away winners with 24-16.

The match was closely fought; with no team wanting to give an inch.

Nigel did not have it their way in the line-outs and few were lost to Elsburg, which proved to be one of Nigel’s stronger points in the match.

The cold weather also did not make things easy as they made quite a few handling mistakes.

The first half was close with Nigel leading 10-9.

The second half was a stop-start affair where both teams tried their utmost to get the game flowing but the handling errors let them down.

There were also numerous penalties awarded in the match.

Nigel scored three tries, three conversions and one penalty converted.

Elsburg scored one try, one conversion and three penalty conversions.

Nigel’s points were scored by tries: Frikkie Jansen (1), Simba Jange (1), Steven Kok (1), conversions: Nico Colyn (1) and Steven Kok (2) and penalty conversion: Nico Colyn (1).

The man of the match was Simba Jange.

Nigel’s second team rolled on with a 44-14 win against Elsburg’s second team.

Nigel scored six tries, four conversions and two penalties.

The scorers were, tries: Hendri Venter (1), George Fritz (3), Freedom Ngubeni (1) and Eugene Tolkin (1), conversions: Handerik Deyzel (4) and penalies: Handerik Deyzel (2).

The man of the match was Johan Groesbeek.

Nigel’s third team got their first win with a hard-fought 10-7 victory over Elsburg’s third team.

Liam Pelzer dotted down for a try and Norman Parker converted the try and penalty to Elsburg’s single try and conversion.

Nigel Rugby Club is making the matches at their home base a family outing with various activities attached to the day.

Before the third teams’ match, there was a Golden Oldies touch rugby match.

Nigel’s next match is an away game against Sasolburg.
