Cambridge FC starts league on high note

The local Hollywood Bets League gets underway.

The Cambridge Football Club started the new Hollywood Bets League on a positive note.

The club has been in action twice recently, recording a draw and an away win.

On October 12, Cambridge faced the Tembisa Destroyers at the McKenzieville Stadium, AlraPark.

Both teams played cautiously and within themselves. The match ended in a 0-0 draw.

On October 18, Cambridge played an away fixture against the Germiston Ashfire Football Club in Germiston.

Cambridge began the match strongly. However, the conditions did not allow Cambridge to play a free-flowing game, and the players had to dig deep to get the match flowing. Many poor finishing decisions let the team down, with scoring opportunities aplenty. There were no goals in the first half.

The second half was more free-flowing, and Cambridge pressed forward with each chance presented. That led to them scoring and going 1-0 up. Germiston tried their best to get an equaliser, but good defence stopped the attacks. Cambridge scored their second goal before Germiston pulled one back.

The final score was 2-1. The Cambridge scorers were Mthusi Mqele and ‘R1’ Njabulo Mhlongo.

“When we play away from home and go home with a win under our belts, we see it as a bonus. The league is competitive. We congratulate the coaching staff for their vision and dedication. We want a promotion to a higher league. To do that, we must not slack down during the season,” said Ignatius Maphike, the Cambridge FC chairperson.

“We also call on local companies to step in and assist the community-based project to advance our town of Nigel.”
