Bruce Fordyce joins local runners, inspires community spirit at parkrun
Bruce Fordyce reminded Nigel runners that showing up matters more than speed when he joined the Ferryvale parkrun.
Legendary long-distance runner Bruce Fordyce brought excitement and inspiration to the Ferryvale parkrun in Nigel when he joined local athletes for the weekly 5km event at the Jim Fouché Park on June 21.
Fordyce, a nine-time Comrades Marathon champion with eight consecutive wins, was also the driving force behind bringing parkrun to SA in 2011.
Since then, the movement has grown to include over 210 venues across the country, providing safe and accessible spaces for individuals of all fitness levels.

Held every Saturday at 08:00, the Ferryvale parkrun has become a beloved part of the community. Organised by volunteers, it welcomes runners, joggers and walkers to complete the course at their own pace.
“It’s not about how fast you go,” said one participant. “It’s about showing up, enjoying the outdoors and being part of something positive.”
Fordyce’s presence was a highlight for many, especially those who grew up watching his legendary performances.
His visit was a powerful reminder of the role community sport plays in uniting people and celebrating the spirit of SA runners.
