Durban World Championships await SA’s strongest after WPC Nationals
South Africa’s strongest athletes brought the heat to Benoni as lifters pushed their limits at the WPC Powerlifting Championships, all vying for a spot at the world stage in Durban.
Big lifts and fierce competition dominated the WPC South African Powerlifting Championships at Urban Shack Benoni from June 13 to 15.
The three-day event, hosted at the Old Bens Sports Club, saw rising stars and seasoned lifters alike vie for a spot at the world championships in Durban this November.
Lifters pushed their limits in hopes of claiming one of three spots per category to represent South Africa on the global stage.
“We saw big lifts, not only from the men but from women who were all fighting to represent South Africa at the worlds,” said WPC SA president Zane Ison. “Some of our ladies lifted more than the men. It’s incredible to see a woman weighing 67kg squat 250kg. That’s what this sport is about – pushing your body to the limit.”
While praising the Benoni organisers for a well-run championship, Ison acknowledged the road ahead as they prepare for the world championships.
“It’s hard,” he said. “We’re expecting over 500 lifters. It’s going to be weigh-ins every day, behind-the-scenes logistics, medals, trophies – making sure every athlete is happy. Hopefully, we’ll be done a month before it starts.”
Day one of the nationals featured a special needs category, with athletes from Westview Special School in Gqeberha taking part.
“You must give everybody the same opportunity,” said Ison.
“Watching these children and seeing the joy on their faces is what makes this sport so great.”
Ison also handed out world record certificates to several special needs athletes for achievements at last year’s nationals.
