Ratanda Hostel redevelopment is on the cards
Lesedi Local Municipality and the Gauteng Provincial Government visited Ratanda on July 2 to address service delivery and housing concerns.
Lesedi Local Municipality, in collaboration with the Gauteng Provincial Government, conducted a community-focused outreach in Ratanda on July 2.
The visit included stops at the Ratanda Hostel, Ratanda Community Centre, and Obed Nkosi Phase 1.
Leading the delegation were the LLM executive mayor, Mluleki Nkosi, and Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, accompanied by senior officials from both spheres of government.

The visit aimed to assess service delivery progress and engage directly with residents on housing and infrastructure matters.
Their first stop was the Ratanda Hostel. Before the visit, various consultation processes had taken place.
Motara announced that the redevelopment of the hostel will commence in the second half of the year.”
Nkosi expressed his gratitude to the MEC for the dedication and leadership regarding the redevelopment.
“This commitment signifies a new chapter for the community. Real progress can only be achieved through partnership and collaboration,” said Nkosi.
Ratanda ward councillor Bheki Mkhize is thankful that the development will start soon.

Mkhize facilitated various meetings with the leadership of the hostel to ensure the go-ahead.
“This initiative is in line with the efforts of the government to improve living conditions, create economic opportunities, enhance safety, and promote the overall well-being of residents in townships, informal settlements, and hostels across Gauteng.”
Later in the day, the leadership of LLM, together with Motara and MMC for Local Economic Development and Planning, Themba Motsepe, held a public meeting at Obed Nkosi Phase 1.

The community raised issues that they felt needed attention. The role players visited various homes in Obed Nkosi and discussed issues one-on-one with some community members.
Nkosi mentioned that residents faced challenges in the Community Residential Units (CRU) in Shalimar Ridge.
Motara pledged to visit the CRU to address the issues. The mayor also halted the electricity disconnections temporarily while awaiting the outcome of forthcoming consultations with the MEC.
