Heidelberg hosts third annual Goggins endurance test

Athletes from Heidelberg and as far as Belfast tackled the 44-hour Goggins Challenge, running 6.4 km every four hours for a total of 76.8 km.

Athletes from the local area and as far as Belfast came together for a unique endurance challenge, putting their strength, stamina and determination to the ultimate test.

The event, known as the Goggins Challenge, took place on a farm just outside Heidelberg.

Now in its third year in the area, the challenge has grown from four athletes in 2023 to nine in 2024, and this year, it welcomed around 20 participants.

The Goggins Challenge was inspired by former athlete and US Navy SEAL David Goggins.

In the challenge, each participant was required to run 6.4 km every four hours for 44 hours. The athletes started on August 15 at 16:00 and continued until August 18 at 12:00, covering a total distance of 76.8 km.

The athletes who participated were Cobus Martin, Wessel van der Merwe, Tiaan Coetzer, Ruhan Reyneke, Riaan van Zyl, Simoni van Zyl, Gert van Zyl, Carlo Rodriques Ferreira, Lourens Zeeman, Riana Wilkinson, Nico de Klerk, Dieter Fleischmann, Jacques van Wyk, Hanno Coetzee, Christo Joubert, Judy Petersen and Rochelle de Klerk, together with two athletes who participated remotely from Australia.

The challenge took place under difficult circumstances, with weather fluctuating between warm, cold and windy conditions.

“Despite the changes in weather, long days, little sleep, hunger, darkness, tired legs, blisters and sore feet, they managed to complete the challenge. These were just ordinary people with jobs, kids, problems and regular lives, who achieved something that is not seen every day. Their dedication to complete the challenge outweighed the soreness and tiredness. It is proof that we can achieve whatever we put our minds to when there are more people with the same goal,” said Cobus Martin, the event organiser.
