Heidelberg baker is a finalist in 2025 Magical Cake Collaboration
A journey sprinkled with sugar and determination as a local baker showcases her work on an international platform.
When Heidelberg’s own ‘royal baker’ Annabelle Tromp first started whisking and kneading in her kitchen, she could hardly have imagined that her cakes would one day stand alongside edible masterpieces from across the globe.
Yet, in 2025, this self-taught artist has found herself in the international spotlight, having been chosen as one of 22 finalists in the Magical Cake Collaboration – a prestigious annual showcase where bakers worldwide conjure extraordinary creations.
This year’s theme, Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, called for artistry, imagination, and no small measure of magic.

Annabelle delivered all three in spectacular style, crafting a breathtaking cake that transported viewers to the cobblestoned streets of Diagon Alley.
She painstakingly sculpted every detail by hand, from spell books and enchanted creatures to the subtle shimmer of wizard’s gold. It was a creation as much a work of art as it was a dessert.
“I wanted to capture the wonder you feel the first time you open a Harry Potter book,” Annabelle said.
“Every little element tells part of the story. That’s the magic of cake, it can be both beautiful and delicious.”

The Magical Cake Collaboration is not a typical bake-off. It’s an invitation-only artistic challenge, drawing elite sugar artists from every corner of the world. Bakers work in their own kitchens before unveiling their designs online to a global audience.
For Annabelle, the news of being selected as a finalist felt like winning a Quidditch World Cup match.
Annabelle’s story is as layered as one of her tiered cakes.
Born in Heidelberg, she grew up with a love for creativity, moving among the Vaal Triangle, Thabazimbi, and back to her hometown.

Along the way, she built a reputation for intricate wedding cakes, whimsical children’s birthday confections, and teaching others the art of baking.
Her royal touch, a signature blend of precision, artistry, and a dash of playfulness, has earned her the nickname Heidelberg’s Royal Baker among locals.
She’s not just about baking for clients; she also runs workshops, travels to share her skills, and inspires a growing community of amateur bakers

For Heidelberg, Annabelle’s achievement is a point of pride. Her Harry Potter masterpiece didn’t just wow international judges; it brought attention to our small Gauteng town and its thriving creative spirit.
Her achievement is a fitting celebration for Women’s Month this August, showcasing how passion, skill, and determination can empower Heidelberg women to make their mark on the world stage.
As she reflects on the journey, Annabelle says her biggest reward isn’t the title, but the joy her creations bring.

“Whether it’s for a couple’s big day or a child’s first birthday, every cake carries a piece of my heart. This collaboration was a dream come true, a reminder that even from a small town, you can reach a global stage.”
And so, like any good wizard in J.K. Rowling’s universe, Annabelle will continue to hone her craft, brew up more magic in her mixing bowls, and inspire others to believe that with enough passion (and maybe a pinch of sugar), anything is possible.
