Nelson Mandela Legacy RIDE4HOPE stops in Heidelberg on journey of hope

The Nelson Mandela Legacy RIDE4HOPE stopped in Heidelberg on its 500km journey from Howick to Soweto, honouring Madiba’s legacy while supporting education through the #Classrooms4Hope initiative.

The Nelson Mandela Legacy Ride4Hope, mandated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, forms part of the centenary commemoration of SA’s first democratically elected president.

More than a cycling event, it is a platform to honour Madiba’s legacy by carrying forward his message of hope for SA. The 2025 race started in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site and finished in Soweto, Gauteng.

This annual cycling event is growing in stature every year.

The ride’s final stop before ending at a primary school in Soweto was the Sasol Service Station in the Heidelberg industrial area. Here, the riders paused to enjoy refreshments and lunch, gathering energy for the last stretch.

Two years ago, the ride also cycled through Heidelberg, but it was one of the first stops en route to KZN.

In 2024, the route took cyclists through the Eastern Cape, and in 2026, it might go through parts of Mozambique.

The ride started on September 2 and ended on September 6. Overnight stops included Ladysmith, Newcastle and Standerton.

The cyclists get ready for their last leg of the race.

The riders rode about 120km per day, covering a total of 500km.

The cyclists passed areas where the #Classrooms4Hope initiative had built classrooms and digital learning spaces.
This is more than a ride. It is Madiba’s legacy of hope in action, improving education and creating opportunities for thousands of learners.

“Riding has always been synonymous with freedom, especially when one rides for fun as opposed to professional competitions. In SA, there is arguably no name more synonymous with freedom than that of struggle icon Nelson Mandela. For that reason, it seems apt to honour Mandela’s centenary celebration with a bicycle ride.

“We are part of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and part of the legacy is to build and donate classrooms in each town we visit. This is the best way to leave a legacy. We believe education is the cornerstone of the success of the community, individuals and leaders of SA, and want to contribute to the cause in any way we can,” said Zethu Kaka, the communications and marketing manager for Legacy Ride4Hope.
