Getting to know our people: A local hero on a mission to help his town

Heidelberg’s Zubenathi Hlongwane shares his journey, challenges, and passion for serving people.

In getting to know our people, Heraut this week met Zubenathi Hlongwane, a Bolt driver with a heart for Heidelberg.

Since 2012, Heidelberg has been home to Zubenathi, who arrived here to work for the Department of Education.
After six years in education, he became a Bolt driver in May this year.

Zubenathi grew up in the Eastern Cape during his primary school years. He later moved to Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, for high school and completed his tertiary studies in Durban. His journey has taken him across provinces, but Heidelberg is where he has found his place.

What inspired him to drive for Bolt? Zubenathi explains: “I have seen gaps in efficient public transport in our town. People, especially in areas like Rensburg, have been struggling for years with reliable transportation. There is also huge cultural diversity in Heidelberg, which makes it interesting to connect with people every day.”

He recalls one unforgettable experience with a passenger: “A passenger once left an expensive cellphone in my car. I had no idea whose it was, so I traced the trip, found her address, and returned it.

“I also reported the matter to Bolt for support. The relief and gratitude from the passenger were something I would not forget.”

Through driving, Zubenathi has developed a fresh appreciation for the town.

“We are privileged not to be part of the negative stories you sometimes hear about Bolt. I take pride in serving and protecting every passenger who rides with me.”

Of course, challenges come with the job. Safety remains a concern.

“As drivers, our names, photos, and cars are visible, but passengers can hide behind multiple accounts or even refuse to pay on cash trips. That’s why I’ve chosen to go completely cashless to avoid risks,” he says.

Outside his Bolt career, Zubenathi is a natural-born leader, passionate about social media, where he has built a strong following of over 131 000 on X. He is also involved in the local taxi business as a member of the Heidelberg District Taxi Association, does charity work through the NGO Thulanoxolo, and is building his business, Fanelesibonge Fleet and Logistics Services.

Family is central to who he is, and giving back remains a priority. His message to Heidelberg is clear: “Let’s unite as a community, protect one another, and protect our town. I am also grateful to the Heidelberg e-hailing Service Team and to those who continue to inspire and support us.”
