Helpende Hand supports breast cancer warriors
Solidariteit Helpende Hand, Heidelberg Branch has joined forces with Cansa and Knitted Knockers to bring comfort and confidence to breast cancer survivors through handcrafted knitted prostheses.
Solidaiteit Helpende Hand, Heidelberg branch, is doing its part to support breast cancer awareness. Under the leadership of Patricia Meyer, the branch continues to play an active role in uplifting and assisting the local community.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Helpende Hand members knitted various items for the cause.
In conjunction with CANSA and Knitted Knockers, these items were created for people affected by breast cancer and were handed over for distribution.
The knitted items were made by Lynn de Klerk and Barbara Kamfer, with various sizes available to suit individual preferences.
Due to the different shapes and sizes that each person may need, there are areas on the knitted items that can be adjusted to meet specific requirements.

“Knitted Knockers has been in South Africa for 11 years now and has assisted patients throughout this time with padding so that they can feel confident while out in public. The specific pattern that was used comes from Australia. Other patterns from around the world were also considered, but we decided on the Australian pattern as it is the most practical,” said Dana Biddle, Knitted Knockers founder.
The knitted items were handed over to Biddle, who will in turn deliver them to CANSA.
In 2026, the Heidelberg branch of Helpende Hand plans to further support breast cancer awareness by bringing a mobile mammogram clinic into the community in October, enabling all women to be screened for any abnormalities.
“The closest Breast Cancer CANSA Care Centre is currently in Alberton, and not everyone has access to get there. Therefore, we want to be there for all women,” said Meyer.
